Swimming and Diving Stand Fifth After Day One

East Meadow, N.Y.- The 2007 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships got off to a fast start as the Cardinal men's and women's team began competition at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
The Cardinal men and women are both in fifth place after the first day and set three school records. For the women, WVU, Notre Dame share the lead with 72, Rutgers is third with 74, Pitt with 62 and U of L with 56. For the men, Notre Dame leads with 114 with WVU and Pitt sharing second place with 87. Rutgers is fourth with 75 with U of L right behind at 72.
"It was a good start for us," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "We just need to have inspired swims to stay in the hunt. Three school records is a great start. I was glad to see our freshmen playing key roles for us. The battle is ahead of us."
In the first event of the day, the U of L women finished sixth in the women's 800 freestyle relay, with Leslie VanWinkle, Anna Dishuck, Liz Halet and Melanie Greyling taking on the task, posting a school record time of 7:25.73. However, reigning champions Notre Dame pulled away for the win.
The men followed in the 800 freestyle relay where the first BIG EAST record of the day was broken as the relay team from West Virginia set the new time at 6:32.21. The U of L team of Vali Preda, Carlos Van Isschot, Rafal Kuchta and Adam Madarassy touched fourth.
U of L diver Robbie Lewis finished seventh with a score of 280.80. Pitt's Alex Volvoetski captured the men's 1-Meter diving title with a score of 374.50.
The 200-yard medley relay concluded the first session of the conference championships. The U of L foursome of Karen Criss, Heather Meng, Johanna Nyysti and Anna Dischuck posted a time of 1:43.21 setting a new U of L record. The second meet record of the day was set as the West Virginia women recorded a time of 1:40.58.
"I want to mention Heather Meng's great split of 28.2 in the 50 breast and Johanna Nyysti's split of 24.6 in the 50 fly," said Albiero.
West Virginia claimed another first place finish as the men broke their second BIG EAST record of the day in the men's 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.21; the original record was set at 1:28.49 by Virginia Tech in 2003. The U of L team of Andrei Teudean, Vali Preda, Matt Maley and Chris Lindauer set a U of L school record with a time of 1:30.02.
The second session of the championships kick off tomorrow with the men's and women's 500 freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay. The women will compete for the 1-Meter Diving crown."
"We have some strong entries in tomorrow's events," said Albiero. "We hope for strong performances in the women's 500 freestyle from Amanda Henleben, Melanie Greyling and Ashley Jackson. Adam Madarrassy will handle the 500 free for the men."
U of L has made its mark this season in the individual medley races.
"The individual medley is arguably our deepest event," said Albiero. "For the women, we have last year's BIG EAST champion Leslie VanWinkle, who will defend her title. Heather Meng, Abby Miller and Karen Criss will also bolster our ranks. Vali Preda will defend his BIG EAST crown in the 200-IM."
