Tatyana Kolesnikova had 15 kills and a career-high five aces to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-21, 30-12, 30-21 win over visiting Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday night at Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 6-4 with UWM posting an identical record. U of L hit .377 and outblocked Milwaukee 9-0. In all the Cardinals notched eight aces, led by Kolesnikova with Samantha Dabbs adding a pair.
"We just keep working to get players experience playing their positions," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "It is all about gaining that team feeling as we teach our system. We have a lot of newcomers that had different systems in their clubs or teams and they hopefully we are getting to the point where it comes naturally and not just from memorizing what they are supposed to do."
U of L used an 8-2 run in the first set that forced UWM to burn both timeouts. Down 18-12, UWM could get no closer than five at 19-14 before the Cardinals pulled away for good. U of L hit a respectable .250 but UWM had 12 hitting errors for a .064 hitting mark that didn't help their cause. Kolesnikova led with six kills and an ace.
U of L held UWM to just 13 points in the second set. It is the lowest since the Cardinals held the University of Kentucky to 10 (in a 30-point game) Oct. 15, 2002. U of L's hitting percentage zoomed to .400 and Kolesnikova served the last 11 straight points to finish off the Panthers.
UWM regrouped after the break and kept it close in the final game. Coming within four points at 16-12, the Panthers had no answer for the Cardinals .531 hitting which kept them at bay.
UWM was led by Cheryl Hegman's 11 kills. Ana Yartseva Stewart hit a season high .600 with seven kills on ten swings. She had a match high 14 digs and three blocks. Svetlana Dukule came alive on offense with eight kills and three blocks for the Cardinals.
