Tatyana Kolesnikova had a career-high 25 kills, an ace and three blocks in her first start to lead the No. 12-ranked University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over visiting Dayton in the first round of the Courtyard by Marriott Airport East Classic.
The Cardinals hit .295 and outblocked the Flyers 18.5 to 5 en route to the 30-28, 28-30, 30-13, 30-17 win. U of L improves to 3-1 and Dayton recorded its first loss in four matches.
"It is very simple, our players need to learn what it means to play as a team and not have everybody trying to do everything themselves," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We are getting to know our roles and learning to stay within them. We have lots of kids who are going to contribute so roles are important. We had some times when we played unbelievably well and other times when we let down."
Ana Yartseva Stewart led U of L with 10 blocks and added eight kills. Stephanie Marsh had nine kills and six blocks. Cardinal transfer, Nicole Bateman, led the Flyers with 14 kills and 18 digs. Chauntay Mickens had12 kills.
U of L cruised to a 14-6 lead in the first game. Dayton stayed close and come to within three at 28-25 and forced Yelin to call timeout. U of L got to game point on a kill by Kolesnikova. Dayton staved off game point three times before Ana Stewart smacked home a slide for the win. U of L hit .275 led by Kolesnikova's five kills. The Flyers were outblocked 5-3.
Dayton tooks its first lead at 15-14 on a kill by Mickens in the second game. U of L wrested the lead back at 21-20 and forced a Dayton timeout. Five straight kills by Kolesnikova took the Cardinals up 27-23. Dayton answered with five straight to tie at 28. A Cardinal service error and a kill by Robynne Green evened the game score at one going into the break.
U of L came out of the break and ran out to an 11-1 lead in the third set. Dayton tried to rally with a 5-1 run to cut the lead 12-6. A 10-3 run by U of L put the Cardinals out of reach as they continued to build it to as many as 13 at 23-10. Dayton could score only three more points before falling 30-13. U of L's hitting improved to .290 and outblocked the Flyers 6-0.
The Cardinals built an early lead going up 11-4 in the final game. After a Dayton timeout, the Flyers clipped the Cardinal lead to three at 18-15. U of L responded with six straight points to go up 24-16. Out of timeouts, Dayton could only score twice more before falling 30-17. U of L hit a torrid .441 and outblocked UD five to one.
U of L returns to action against Tennessee Tech, which fell 3-1 to Arizona in the front end of the doubleheader, at noon on Saturday. U of L will face No. 18-ranked Arizona at 7:30 in Cardinal Arena.
