BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - University of Louisville junior Soimo Kiplagat led the way in a strong performance by the Cardinals with a first-place finish in the Indiana Community 5K at the IU Championship Cross Country Course on Friday evening. The field of 75 runners and final individual results include all men's and women's entries.

Kiplagat, a native of Kapsabet, Kenya, and a transfer from Lindenwood University, covered the 5-kilometer course in a time of 16 minutes, 1 second to earn first-place honors and lead six Cardinal runners in the top seven positions. Following closely behind Kiplagat was sophomore Cory Thorne in second place with a time of 16:06. Thorne, from Portsmouth, N.H., was competing for the first time since returning from Beijing, China, less than two weeks ago after representing Team USA at the World Junior Track & Field Championships.

Sophomore Ryan Byrne was third at 16:06, followed by freshman Scott McClain in fourth at 16:14 and freshman Matt Smith in fifth at 16:20. Junior Thad Schroeder was seventh at 16:28 to round out the UofL men's runners.

On the women's side, freshman Tarah McKay was the top overall finisher with a time of 18:31, while freshman Kelsey Page was next for the Cards in third place among the women with a time of 19:21.

"This was a very good meet for our team because we had the top finishers on both the men's and women's side and we learned a lot about some of our young runners," said head coach Ron Mann. "This was a good way for our team to open the season. Now, we'll prepare to face a strong field of runners at Tennessee in two weeks."

Following a week away from competition, the Cards will return to action on Sept. 15 at the University of Tennessee Invitational in Maryville, Tenn.
