LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field program closed its 2006 home schedule by winning seven event titles at the Ohio River Challenge on Saturday at Cardinal Park Track Stadium on the U of L campus. The unscored meet, which included athletes from Cincinnati, Marquette, Bellarmine, Berea, Lindsey Wilson and Indianapolis, was the final chance for athletes to qualify for the NCAA regional meets in two weeks.
Leading the way for the Cardinal women were NCAA regional qualifiers Jennifer Hartig and Holly Geibel. Hartig, a senior from Alexandria, Ky., won the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 5.5 inches, while Geibel, a sophomore from Butler, Pa., won the javelin with a mark of 146-04. The U of L women also got first-place finishes from junior LaShondra Durias in the 100-meter dash (12.05 seconds), junior Aajah Showell in the 100m hurdles (14.05 seconds) and junior Emily Turland in the discus (150-06).
The 23rd-ranked Cardinal men's team won three event titles led by junior Wesley Korir in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:29.49. Junior Robert Amedee won the 100m dash with a time of 10.70 seconds, while junior Chris Danks won the 800m run with a time of 1:55.51. On Tuesday of last week, the U of L men's team earned the program's first-ever national ranking entering the Trackwire 25 at the 23rd position tied with South Carolina.
"This was a great tune-up for our team as we prepare for the regional meet in two weeks," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We were looking for consistency in our performances and that's exactly what we got today. The kids came out and competed really well after a very competitive event last week at the BIG EAST Championships, so I think we're poised and ready for the regional."
U of L will have a week away from competition before the traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., for the 2006 NCAA Mideast Regional Championship on May 26-27 at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee. The Cards have a school record total of 17 qualifiers for the NCAA Mideast Regional. The record number is comprised of 13 athletes in 15 events, led by four athletes in two events each including Tone Belt (high jump, long jump), Andre Black (triple jump, long jump), Arthur Turland (discus, hammer) and Emily Turland (discus, hammer).
