Justine Landi had 19 kills and three aces to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over West Virginia in BIG EAST action.
U of L moves to 17-6 for the year and 10-1 in the Big East. WVU drops to 2-26 and 1-10 in the league.
"We have to continue to make sure we don't make unforced errors that let our opponents back in the game, said Louisville head coach Leonid Yelin. "We won't be able to have a lapse tomorrow as we face Pitt because they just knocked off Cincinnati 3-2 and have good momentum." In the first game, U of L fell behind 11-3 in the early going and never led until 31-30 as they played catch-up ball the whole game. The Cardinals hit .246 but were aced four times, three times by Aurora Ebert-Santos. U of L was led by Stephanie Marsh's seven kills on 12 attacks and no errors enroute to the 34-32 win.
U of L regrouped and took a 12-5 lead in the second set. WVU battled back to within three at 18-15 but U of L turned it up a notch and finished off the Mountaieers 30-21. Justine Landi had six kills on eght swings in the set and added two aces. U of L outblocked WVU 6-2.
Game three was a mirror of the first except that WVU came out with the win. The Mountaineers scored six unanswered points to go up 26-25 for their first lead and then held on for the win. Three of WVU's final four points were on U of L errors. Five service errors did not help the Cardinal cuase. Tatyana Kolesnikovas seven kills were not enough. WVU was led by Kristina Gallahan's five kills.
U of L took control in the final set with a 30-17. Tatyana Kolesnikova had seven kills to lead the Cardinals in that set.
Kolesnikova had 13 kills as did Ana Yartseva Stewart and Stephanie Marsh. U of L outblocked WVU 13-3.
The Cardinals take on Pitt Sunday at 2 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
