The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a meet with Southern Illinois at the Mizzou Extravaganza. The women beat the Salukis 95-51 with the men falling 86-45 Saturday morning. The meet is the second of four scheduled for this weekend in Columbia, Mo.
"It was a tough morning of competition but the women are now 2-0 because our depth really prevailed," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "The men had their hands full with SIU, which is a strong swimming school. We have lots of races this weekend and we will find out who we can count on."
After both the men's and women's relay teams were edged in the opening 200-medley relay, the women by .28 of a second, the teams got to work in the meet. Amanda Henleben won the 500-free for the Cardinals with Adam Madarassy turning in the top finish for the men in that event.
Anna Dishuck kept the momentum going with a first in the 100-IM with newcomer Danny Keeling touching third for the men in the event. The Cardinals went two, three, four in the women's 200-back led by Karen Criss, followed by Larissa Niehoff and Alana Berrocal. The men were led by Chris Pinkston's third and Andrei Teudean's fourth.
Heather Meng led a strong Cardinal field in the 200-breast with a first followed by Amanda Taylor touching third and Liz Osucha surging to fourth. Chris Lindauer continued his strong showing this weekend with a first in the 200-breast for the men.
In the 200-fly, Abby Miller took first with Amanda Henleben right in her wake for second. Jenny Schimenti held on for fourth to add points for the Cardinals. Adam Madarassy was edged by hundredths of a second for a second place in the men's 200-fly.
The women sealed their victory with a win in the 800-free relay. The foursome of Leslie Van Winkle, Melanie Greyling, Liz Halet and Leigh Smith took first.
The Diving events were not immediately available. The Cardinals swim again this evening against Iowa.
