Outside hitter Tatyana Kolesnikova had 17 kills, five digs, an ace and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-17, 30-27, 30-27 sweep of visiting Georgetown in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
U of L clinched the second seed and await their opponent in next weekend's BIG EAST Championship as a four way tie has developed between Cincinnati, Marquette, Pitt, Notre Dame. U of L improves to 20-6 and 13-1 in the conference. GU drops to 8-20 and 2-12 in the league.
"Georgetown played with a lot of spirit but our blocking finally kicked in," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "Our hitting stayed consistent and we made very few unforced errors."
U of L bolted to an 18-8 lead early in the first set and Georgetown could get no closer. U of L hit .300 to GU's .020. Kolesnikova led U of L hitters with five kills. The Hoyas gave the Cardinals trouble in the second game with the Cardinals not being able to take the lead until 18-17 on a pair of Justine Landi's kills. The Hoyas tied again at 26 but U of L outscored them 4-1 down the stretch for the win. Kolesnikova once again led hitting with six kills. In the final set, after leading 13-7, U of L allowed GU to go on an 8-0 run to go up 15-13. U of L scrambled back to tie at 22. The score see-sawed until, tied at 27, U of L launched a 3 point run for the win.
Senior Stephanie Marsh joined Kolesnikova in double digit kills with 11, adding a team-high 13 digs and seven blocks to her totals. Ana Yartseva Stewart had nine kills, an ace and six blocks for the Cardinals. The Hoyas were led by Annie Connor's 10 kills and two blocks.
U of L will find out its opponent for the first round of the BIG East Monday afternoon when the brackets will be announced. U of L ran the Conference regular season table last year but was upset by Notre Dame in the championship match. St. John's has clinched the top seed and will be the team to beat.
