Tatyana Kolesnikova had 15 kills, four aces and three blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-14, 30-21, 30-18 sweep of DePaul in BIG EAST volleyball Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 15-6 and 8-1 in league play. DePaul drops to 5-20 and winless in nine matches for the BIG EAST. The Cardinals hit .398 for the match and outblocked the Blue Demons 9-0. U of L recorded nine aces to DePaul's none.
"This was a good team effort today. I thought we played good defense and our hitting was on today," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We did a good job of taking care of business and not looking ahead to Sunday's Notre Dame match."
U of L blew out to a 12-3 lead in the first game and the Demons could not recover. Cardinal hitting of .417 made the task that much harder. The Cards built the lead to as many as 14 at 25-11 and then closed the game 30-14. In the second set, U of L had a comfortable lead at 21-11 but DePaul battled back to get within eight at 28-20 but it was too little, too late as the Cards won 30-21.
DePaul showed up late after the break and started the final set down 2-0 on a delay of match penalty. However, the extra time seemed to energize them and they stayed close in the early going. U of L had to call timeout at 17-10 but then built the lead to nine at 25-16 and then outscored DePaul 5-2 down the stretch for the win.
The Cardinals face Notre Dame Sunday at 1 p.m. The Irish were upset by Cincinnati early Saturday to fall to 7-2 in the league. Mark Neely and Bill Doleman will be calling the action at Cardinal Arena as ESPNU broadcasts the match between these BIG EAST rivals. Match time is 1 p.m.
The Irish post a regular season record of 13-9. Louisville native Christina Kaelin is a leader for ND with 219 kills and 10 solo blocks. Notre Dame head coach Debbie Brown is 11-3 in her career against Louisville. The last time U of L faced the Irish was Nov. 20, 2005 in the BIG EAST Championships final at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Also a nationally televised match, the Irish prevailed 3-2 in a clash of the titans as seniors All-Americans Lena Ustymenko and Lauren Brewster battled it out. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
