Sophomore outside hitter Tatyana Kolesnikova nad 17 kills, two aces and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-23, 30-27, 30-21 sweep of Cincinnati in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
U of L (13-6, 6-1) hit .291 to UC's .167 and outblocked the Bearcats 11-6. The Cardinals, ranked No. 11 in the nation in blocking, have not been outblocked this year. The Cards had 10 aces led by Justine Landi's four. Two other Cardinals joined Kolesnikova in double digit kills with Ana Yartseva adding 12 kills, hitting .579, and adding four blocks. Svetlana Dukule connected for 10 kills. UC was led by Jessie Nevitt's 11 kills and three blocks.
"You have to win every home match in this league," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "Cincinnati is our longtime rival and you absolutely can never take them for granted. We had some lapses of concentration but credit Cincinnati for keeping the pressure on at all times."
U of L had a nine point lead at 15-6 when UC put together an 11-4 run to come within two at 20-18. U of L held the Bearcats at arm's length scoring seven of the final 10 points for the 30-23 win. U of L hit .292 to UC's .149. The Cards were led by Kolesnikova's seven kills. In the second game, U of L had a six point lead when UC took advantage of four straight Cardinal errors and a kill by Jenny Custer to come within one at 14-13. U of L called time out but UC kept the pressure on and took the lead at 20-19 and built that lead to five on four straight kills by Jessie Nevitt. Yelin called timeout and the Cardinals were able to regroup and run off seven straight points powered by two aces by Landi to go up 27-24. Two kills by Kolesnikova and one by Yartseva Stewart gave the game to the Cardinals 30-27 and 2-0 game lead going into the break.
U of L trailed 14-11 in the final game but battled back to tie at 16 and then built a five point lead on two blocks and three Kolesnikova kills. UC coach Reed Sunahara called timeout but the Cardinals strung together a 6-2 run down the stretch for the win.
U of L is idle until Oct. 22 when Seton Hall visits at 1 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
