Swimming and Diving Complete Final Day at Shamrock Invitational

The University of Louisville swimming and diving team completed the final day at Notre Dame's Shamrock Invitational. The women defeated Oakland 243-123, but fell to host Notre Dame 218-148. The men beat Oakland 178-177 but fell to Penn State 262-105, Notre Dame 277-91 and Missouri 252-116.
The day's events started out well when the women's 200-medley relay team of Leslie VanWinkle, Heather Meng, Johanna Nyysti and Emily Rabe finishing second with a time of 1:48.55. The men's team of Andrei Teudean, Vali Preda, Tyler Smith and Steven Lowrance turned in a time of 1:34.23 in a very close finish.
In the 400-IM, U of L's Abby Miller was third with a time of 4:28.54 with Jenny Schimenti right behind her in fourth. Vali Preda finished third for the men with a time of 4:04.23.
In the 100-fly, Schimenti turned in another strong performance with a third place time of 58.58. On the men's side, Andrei Teudean was the top Cardinal finisher at No. 8.
In the 200-free, Leslie VanWinkle was third with a tine of 1:52.45. Notre Dame's Katie Carroll won the race with a time of 1:50.66. Charlton Lawson was the fastest Cardinal male swimmer in the event with a time of 1:45.26.
U of L's Heather Meng racked up points with a first in the 100-breast with a time of 1:04.72, almost a full second ahead of the runner up. Johanna Nyysti was fifth with a time of 1:05.51. Vali Preda was second for the men in the event with a time of 57.24.
In the 100-back, Larissa Niehoff finished fifth with a time of 1:00.84. For the men, Andrei Teudean was third with a time of 50.91 just .76 of a second off the winning time in a hard-fought race.
Marianne Bradford's win in the 1-meter diving was another highlight of the day when she edged Notre Dame's Tara Hyer by 1.7 points for the victory. Robbie Lewis finished eighth for the men with 252.8 points.
In the 800-medley relay, Melanie Greyling, Ashley Jackson, Abby Miller and Leslie VanWinkle surged to a second place finish. U of L's men's A team of Gaelen Horne, Tyler Smith, Charlton Lawson and Vali Preda was sixth.
Ashley Jackson had a sterling performance in the 1650, finishing first with a time of 17.15.57. Charlton Lawson was eighth for the men.
In the 200 back, Larissa Niehoff was U of L's top finisher at fourth with Amanda Taylor right behind her at fifth and Abby Miller in sixth. Andrei Teudean finished fourth for the men in that event.
U of L went one-two in the 100-free with Melanie Greyling was awarded first with a time of 52.82. Leslie VanWinkle was awarded second with a time of 53.14. Leigh Smith was fifth in that race for the Cardinals.
Heather Meng was awarded a first place finish in the 200-breast with a time of 2:20.92. Vali Preda was first with a time of 2:03.74, the fastest time in the field as none of the exhibition times were faster.
Abby Miller was awarded first place with Jenny Schimenti placeing second in the 200-fly. Teudean was fifth for the men.
In the 400-free relay, Leslie VanWinkle, Jenny Schimenti, Leigh Smith and Melanie Greyling touched first with a time of 3:30.43. For the men, Jonathan Farnham, Charlton Lawson, Andrei Teudean and Vali Preda were 10th.
