Swimming and Diving Complete First Day at Shamrock Invitational

After the first day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational at Notre Dame, the University of Louisville swimming and diving teams are turning in strong performances.
The U of L women lead Oakland University 79-31 and trail Notre Dame 78-32. The U of L men lead Oakland 59-45, trail Penn State 84-25, trail Missour 73-36 and trail Notre Dame 81-28.
The meet started well when the 200-freestyle relay team of Leslie VanWinkle, Emily Rabe, Johanna Nyysti and Melanie Greyling finished second. In the 500-free, Ashley Jackson and Abby Miller touched third and fourth. In the 200-IM, Leslie VanWinkle finished third with Jenny Schimenti finishing sixth for the Cards. Vali Preda finished first for the men in the 200-IM, touching almost a full second ahead of the field. . In the 50-free, Greyling was fifth with Nyysti hot in her wake and VanWinkle right behind her. Jonathan Farnham was the top finisher for the men at ninth in a very tight race.
In the three-meter dving board, U of L's Marianne Bradford edged Notre Dame's top diver by two points to win the event. The men were on the one-meter board and U of L's Robbie Lewis was sixth for U of L.
In the final event of the day, the U of L team of Larissa Niehoff, Heather Meng, Jenny Schimenti and Melanie Greyling placed third in the 400-medley relay. The foursome of Andrei Teudean, Vali Preda, Tyler Smith and Jonathan Farnham finished third for U of L.
U of L will continue action tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m.
