
Swimming and Diving Falls to Intrastate Rival Kentucky

The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team was swept by visiting Kentucky Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville. UK men won 160-125 and UK women won 172-119.
"I am very proud of our efforts today," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "I think we showed Kentucky great respect by coming in and performing at our best this season. I am proud to be part of our journey in building the program and seeing how far we have come."
In the first race, the 200-Medley Relay, the UK women set a new pool record at the newly opened Ralph Wright Natatorium with a time of 1:43.26. U of L's Larissa Niehoff, Heather Meng, Johanna Nyysti and Melanie Greyling earned points for the Cardinals as runnerup. The UK men's 200-Medley Relay earned 11 points with a first place finish. The race pitted the Farnham twins against each other in the final leg with UK's Daniel turning a blazing time of 19.78. U of L's Jon was right in his wake with a time of 20.47. The U of L men's time of 1:33.07 was faster than the pool record of 1:33.59 as Andrei Teudean, Vali Preda, Chris Pinkston and J. Farnham touched second.
In the grueling 1650-free, U of L Ashley Jackson set a new pool record with a time of 17:24.89 with her third place finish. UK's Moore won the race with Leah Harms making it a one-two sweep for the Cats. For the men, UK's Eric Weber turned in a time of 15:38.95 for the win, with Charlton Lawson as U of L's top finisher with a third place time of 16:30.54.
In the 200-free, U of L's Leslie VanWinkle finished second just behind UK's Jennifer Bradford who won with a time of 1:51.94. For the men, UK's Steve Manley won with a blazing time of 1:37.72, just four seconds off the American record. U of L's Matt Lees finished third with Anthony Mason and Gaelen Horne finishing fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
In the 100-back, the Wildcats swept the first three spots with Niehoff finishing fourth just .33 of a second from third. For the men, Teudean made it a race, pushing Dan Farnham before touching second with the top three swimmers setting a new pool record.
In the 100-breaststroke, Cardinal Heather Meng was out-touched by just .03 of a second behind UK's Shantel Commander. Johanna Nyysti and Stephanie Wyatt picked up some points for the Cardinals. In a similar scenario for the men, U of L's Vali Preda finished .16 of a second behind Kristian Outinen with both men shaving nearly two seconds off the pool record.
"I was pleased to see Stephanie Wyatt make her BIG EAST cut in the 100-breast," said Albiero. "We need her senior leadership."
In the 200-fly, U of L's Abby Miller's win set a pool and school record with a 2:02.7. Jenniy Schimenti powered to a third place finish to help the Cardinal cause. For the men, Tyler Smith turned it U of L's best finish with a pool record breaking time of 1:53.61 for a second place finish. UK's Grant Nelson finished first with a speedy 1:50.73
"I was highly pleased that Abby set a school record and really established herself as a swimmer to contend with and capped a great freshman season for her." said Albiero.
In the 50-free, Melanie Greyling surged to a first place finish with a time of 24.49. Leigh Smith was fourth. Nikia Deveaux was UK's best finisher at second, just .03 off Greyling's pace. Cardinal Jon Farnham brought the standing room only crowd to its feet when he won the 50-free by .20 of a second ahead of Mark Doyle.
"Jon's win in the 50 was huge," said Albiero.
In one-meter diving, U of L's Robbie Lewis put up a score of 292.78, more than 30 points ahead of UK's Dan Cuilla. UK's Taryn Ignacio won the board in a Wildcat sweep of the first five spots. Sarah Sandroni was U of L's top finisher.
After the break, in the 100-free Leslie VanWinkle was U of L's top finisher, touching second to UK's Jennifer Bradford, who put a time of 50.99. Leigh Smith scooted in third to add to U of L's point total. The 100-free saw the Farnham brothers square off again. Daniel edged Jonathan as they finished one-two with U of L's Matt Lees finishing fourth.
In the 200-back, UK swept the top three spots in the women's event with Larissa Niehof turning in Louisville's best finish earning fourth place points. For the men, it was a blazing finish with UK's Smith just out-touching Teudean by .02 of a second. They shattered the pool mark with a time of1:49.84 and 1:49.86 respectively, eclipsing the pool record of 1:54.97.
"Andrei continues to score a truckload of points for us," said Albiero.
In the 200-breaststroke, Shantel Commander and Lindsey Myhre going one-two with Heather Meng finisheng third for the Cardinals. For the men, U of L's Vali Preda was edged by .25 of a second by Outinen, both of them cutting almost seven seconds off the pool record. Outinen posted a time of 2:01.50 and Preda right behind at 2:01.75.
"Heather's performance in both breaststroke events was great for her," said Albiero.
In 3-meter diving, Ignacio repeated for the UK women with a score of 324.68 with Sandroni finishing fifth as U of L's top finisher. Robbie Lewis took the 3-meter board with a score of 312.37, ahead of Cuilla's 240.00.
In the 500-free, Kentucky took the top two spots, with U of L's Abby Miller just out-touching teammate Ashley Jackson for third and fourth. For the men, Charlton Lawson set a pool record with a second place finish right behind Kentucky's Grant Nelson. In the 100-fly, Jenny Schimenti scored nine points with Meg Densmore getting second place points. Heather Bradford had the fastest time in exhibition for the Cats. For the men, Teudean was edged out by .29 of a second by winner Warren Grobbelaar, with both men bettering the pool record.
After the second break, Jenny Schimenti was just edged by .20 of a second to finish right behind Linday Myhre. However, Schimenti was awarded first place points as Myhre swam exhibition. UK's in the 200-IM. For the men, Vali Preda finished second with a time of 1:54.04 behind UK's Steve Manley's quick time of 1:49.13, who swam exhibition.
In the final race of the day, the UK women foursome of Bradford, Keli Hnat, Kelley Morrison and Laura Graham touched first with a time of 1:37.10. The Louisville team of Nyysti, Greyling, Emily Rabe and VanWinkle were awarded 11 points. For the men, J. Farnham, Lees, Chris Lindauer and Steven Lowrance were the top finishers for U of L.
"I wanted us to show up and compete and we did. It is amazing how far we have come," said Albiero.
