Lena Ustymenko had 21 kills and 12 digs to lead the University of Louisville to three-game sweep of No. 22 ranked Long Beach to stay undefeated at 6-0 at the UNLV Volleyball Classic in Las Vegas Saturday night.
"We had to retool the lineup when we lost a starter and it is not easy to do when the learning curve comes against a respected coach and a top 25 opponent," said Yelin. "So to come away with a win is awesome. It was a very hard fought game."
In the first game, Long Beach (4-2) popped out to a 6-4 lead but after U of L tied at seven neither team could pull away. In the end, U of L's hot hitting at .325 beat Long Beach's four team blocks to U of L's two. Lena Ustymenko led the way with eight kills on 14 swings. Hoffman connected on three of her four swings. The Beach's Ali Daley led them with six kills and an ace.
In the second game, U of L used a short spurt of four straight points to spring ahead to 16-11 and LBSU called timeout to regroup. The Cardinals slowly pushed the lead to seven at 27-20 on one of Ustymenko's six kills of the game. The Cardinals had three blocks to LBSU's one and hit .441 to LBSU's .149.
U of L did not lead the third game until they scored the final two points of the game and match. Torrid hitting at .419 kept U of L in the game helped by five aces and 49 digs.
Louisville's Hoffman and Ana Yartseva had double digit kills with 11 and 12 respectively. Libero Nicole Bateman had 10 digs. Long Beach was led by Rosie Lewis' 14 kills and two blocks.
