Jennifer Hoffman had 17 kills and 10 blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Marquette in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday evening in Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals, who have clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship set to begin Friday in Louisville, moved their record to 24-1 and 12-1 with the 30-23, 30-18, 28-30, 30-23 win. Marquete drops to 15-11 and 7-6 in the league.
The Cardinals hit .425 and outblocked the Eagles 16-4.
"When we have good blocking it is very difficult for teams to come back on us," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
In the first game, U of L hit .414 and outblocked the Eagles 4-1. The Cardinals steamed out to a 12-5 lead in the early going put Marquettee used a six-point run to pull within the at 17-14. The Eagles got as close as two at 22-20 on a kill by Tiffany Helmbrecht. The Cardinals had an 8-3 run down the stretch for the 30-23 win. U of L was led by Lena Ustymenko, who had four of her team-high 21 kills in the first set.
In the second game, Marquette stayed much closer until a little 6-3 run put the Cards up 24-14 and another 9-3 run to put the Eagles away 30-18. Hoffman had six kills and three blocks to lead the Cardinals.
Marquette used a little 4-0 run after being tied at 14 to build a lead on the Cardinals in the third game. U of L kept swinging and didn't catch up until two straight kills by Ustymenko tied it at 28. Monica Renfrow had a kill to get MU to game point and an Elena Pilnikova error gave the Eagles the game. FIve service errors by the Cardinals in that set did little to help the Louisville effort.
In the final game, U of L skipped out to a 12-7 lead and forced a Marquette timeout. The Eagles tried to chip away at U of L's lead but could only get as four at 20-16. Louisville got match point on a kill by Ana Yartseva, who had 14 kills for the match.
Marquette's Jamie Mueller had 23 kills and seven digs. Kimberly Todd had 15 kills and four aces.
Louisville is back in action Sunday against third place Syracuse. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
