Senior Lena Ustymenko had 19 kills and 13 digs to lead the No. 6-ranked University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Long Island University Saturday in Brooklyn, NY.
The Cardinals stay unbeaten in 16 matches with the 31-29, 28-30, 30-19, 30-18 win. LIU drops to 10-11 for the season. U of L outhit the Blackbirds .300 to .081 and had 15 blocks to LIU's six.
"We did what we had to do to get out of there with a win," said U of L coach Leonid Yelin. "It was one of those games that looks much better on the stat sheet rather than seeing it out on the court.
The Cardinals hit .317 in the first game, to LIU's .089 but could not shake the scrappy LIU team. The Blackbirds kept the pressure on in the second set and with the Cardinals hitting just .120, U of L could not turn the tide back as LIU won 30-28.
The Cardinals seemed to make the necessary adjustments at the break when they came out and dispatched LIU 30-19 and 30-18 in the third and fourth games. The Cardinals hit .448 and 433 respectively in those games.
Junior Stephanie Marsh had a season-high 13 kills and equalled her season-high with seven blocks in the Cardinal effort. Hoffman had 15 kills and hit a torrid .591 with eight blocks. Svetlana Dukule made the fourth Cardinal in double digit kills with 11 and four blocks.
LIU was led by Lizelle Jackson who had 17 kills and 12 digs for the Blackbiords.
