SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Lena Ustymenko had 20 kills to lead the No. 6 ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-22, 31-29, 30-21 as the Cardinals remain unbeaten at 15-0 and 5-0 in the Big East.
"They gave us all we could handle in the second game," said Leonid Yelin. "Lena had an outstanding hitting night for us."
Ustymenko had 20 kills and hit .633 with three aces and seven digs for the Cardinals. Jennifer Hoffman had eight kills and seven blocks.
In the first game, U of L pulled out to a 14-8 lead early and then built it to nine at 20-11. After an Seton Hall timeout, the Pirates scored three straight and pulled to within five at 23-18 when U of L was in the net. U of L zipped five service aces to keep SHU back on its heels and outblocked the Pirates 4-1. Ustymenko had six kills on 10 attacks and no hitting errors to lead the Cards. The Pirates got help from Tricia Meyers who had five kills on six attacks.
The second set stayed close with neither team able to build more than a two point lead. After tying at 23, U of L scored two straight to go up 25-23 and force a SHU timeout. The Pirates came out of the timeout and Jessica Pompei aced the Cards after also scoring on a U of L miscue. The teams traded points and U of L got to game point at 29-28. Seton Hall tied and then Ustymenko had two straight kills to give the Cardinals a 31-29 win and a 2-0 lead at the break. Oddly, U of L hit .356 to SHU's .167, even though the score stayed tight. U of L's five service errors didn't help the Cardinal cause. Ustymenko had 10 kills to lead the Cardinals.
The Cardinals used a little 6-2 run in the third set to build their lead to four at 15-11. The Pirates called timeout but theCardinals continued to score consistently. U of L arrived at game point on a block by Rui Liu and Jennifer Hoffman. SHU was able to stave off match point once but fell 30-21.
