DAYTON, Ohio -- Lena Ustymenko had 13 kills to lead the No. 17 ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-21, 30-21, 30-14 sweep of Morehead State at the Wright State Raider Challenge.
U of L improves to 7-1 while Morehead falls to 1-8.
The Cardinals blocking and hitting proved too much for the Eagles as U of L hit .434 as a team to MSU's .103. U of L recorded 11 blocks while MSU did not have a block.
"We looked much more comfortable out there," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "When you hit .434 for the match that is difficult for an opponent to overcome. However, Morehead played with a lot of emotion and were fighting until the end."
Early in the first game, the Eagles did not allow Louisville build a lead of more than two points. Trailing by two at 19-17, Morehead State defense faltered and Louisville went on an 11-3 run to fall 30-21. U of L hit .500 connecting for 20 kills on 34 attacks with just three errors. Bing Sun led U of L with seven kills.
Morehead popped out to a 9-3 lead in the second game, but the Cardinals came back to tie at 12. U of L took its first lead at 17-16 on a Bing Sun kill and MSU was unable to regain its momentum. U of L ran off the final six points of the game unanswered to win 30-21. U of L out-hit Morehead .306 to .108. Blocking was the deciding factor as U of L out-blocked the Eagles 7-0.
In the final game, U of L surged to a 14-3 lead and never looked back.
Bing Sun added 10 kills and three blocks with middle blocker Jennifer Hoffman connecting on eight of 10 attacks with no errors to hit .800 with five blocks to her credit as well. Morehead was led by Jennifer Kennedy's eight kills and 11 digs.
