CARBONDALE, Ill. - Junior Jacey Hughes won the pole vault to lead the University of Louisville women's track and field team in Saturday's season-opening meet at the Southern Illinois Spring Classic.

The event was held at the Lew Hartzog Track in Carbondale.

Hughes cleared 10 feet, 11.75 inches to win the event for the fifth time in her outdoor career. The Utica, Ky., native holds the school record at 12-2.50.

Freshman Kelly Ennis had a solid collegiate outdoor debut with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Ennis ran a time of 57.62 seconds, the fourth fastest time in school history. The Leonardtown, Md., native also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.63.

Senior Amanda Bell finished runner-up in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:58.81, the fifth best time by a Cardinal senior.

Junior Ify Akubeze turned in a fourth-place effort in the long jump with a mark of 18-10.50, the ninth best mark in school history. Akubeze also finished 12th in the 100-meter dash (12.42).

In the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Aajah Showell ran the third best time by a U of L freshman to finish fourth (15.07). Sophomore Shareka Nance recorded a personal-best mark in the triple jump (36-4.75) to place eighth, while junior Michele Burke was ninth (36-3).

Sophomore Emily Kost led the Cardinal throwers with three top-seven showings. Kost placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 131-2. The New Albany, Ind., native was sixth in the hammer throw at 150-5, the fifth best mark ever by a Cardinal sophomore, and was seventh in the shot put with a personal-best put of 43-11.25.
