Ana Yartseva had 13 kills, and four blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-20, 30-22, 30-28 win over UAB in Conference USA action Saturday night at Cardinal Arena.
U of L raises its record to 14-2 and 4-0 in Conference Play. UAB drops to 1-14 and 0-4 in the league.
"UAB is a young team and they will keep on improving as their season continues," said Leonid Yelin. "We took care of business and were able to get our younger players some quality time on the floor."
U of L hit .300 as a team, recorded 5 aces and outblocked UAB 8-6. The Cardinals have not been outblocked all season. UAB hit .200 and had six team blocks.
U of L used hot hitting and blocking to upend UAB 30-20 in the first game. The Cardinals converted 20 kills on 41 attacks and had just one block.
In game to, UAB took its first and only lead at 8-7 on a tip by setter Jenna Link. UAB stayed close but at 19-18, U of L went on an 11=4 run to win 30-22,
In the final game, UAB hit .342 and took an early lead. U of L could not catch up until they went ahead 26-25 on a Blazer hitting error. The teams traded points until U of L had kills by Yartseva and Lena Ustymenko to seal the win.
The Cardinals had three other hitters in double digit kills. Ustymenko had 14 with Kara Hamilton and Jennifer Hoffman each pitching in 10.
UAB was led by Cassi Ociesa who had 10 kills and four blocks for the Blazers.
