Steph Marsh had 15 kills, nine digs and a block to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-17, 30-25, 30-22 sweep of South Florida in Conference USA volleyball action Friday night at Cardinal Arena.
No. 22-ranked U of L improves to 13-2 and 3-0 in league play. USF drops to 3-9 and 1-2.
"Every conference match is vital and for us to be able to play people in various positions and situations will prove invalubale come the end of the season," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
U of L played its entire bench and was still able to keep its streak of outblocking its opponents alive at 15 straight.
USF took its first lead 7-6 after an evenly played first game. The Cardinals then reeled off seven of the next eight points including five in a row to take a 13-8 lead and forcing the Bulls to take a timeout. From there the Cards continued to pull away on the strength of a .375 to 0.48 advantage in hitting percentage.
In the second game, the Bulls took an early 6-1 lead, but the Cardinals battled back to even the score at 9. USF then went on a run of its own scoring 4 straight points. With USF up 13-9, the Cards went on a 7-0 run to take the lead 17-14 and force the Bulls to take a timeout.
Up 10-9 in the third game, U of L reeled off 11 of the next 14 points, including seven in a row to take a 20-12 lead and never looked back.
The 22-ranked Cardinals take on fellow C-USA foe UAB tomorrow night before going on the road to face TCU.
U of L was aided by Lena Ustymenko's 12 kills, four aces and two blocks. Ana Yartseva hit .714 with five kills on seven swings. USF was led by Johari Williams and Kristina Fabris who both recorded 10 kills.
