
Women's Basketball Defeats Bearcats 65-54

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team used a 16-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half to defeat the Cincinnati Bearcats 65-54 Saturday evening in Freedom Hall. Senior All-American candidate Sara Nord led the Cardinals with 24 points and six assists. Nord was 5 of 8 from behind the arc. Freshman Jazz Covington posted her sixth double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Covington scored on an old fashioned three point play to start the half. Jessica Huggins, Nord and Katie Olson all nailed three-pointers during the 16-2 run by the Cardinals. Treasure Humphreys hit the Bearcats' first three of the game at the 14:38 mark to stop the run. Louisville shot 60 percent from the arc in the second half and finished the game hitting 50 percent from the arc. The Cardinals finished the game shooting 38.3 percent. Louisville outrebounded Cincinnati 42-27.
Cincinnati jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Nord hit a three-pointer that started a 6-0 run for the Cardinals, tying the game at eight with just over 14 minutes remaining in the half. Nord made a layup at the 9:25 mark to give the Cards their first lead of the game. Louisville pushed the lead to 10 with just over a minute remaining when Nord hit another trey. Debbie Merrill made a layup with 11 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 26-18 at the half.
Louisville finished the half shooting 40 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from behind the arc. Cincinnati shot 36 percent from the field and did not hit a three-pointer in the half.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 6 as they host UAB in Freedom Hall at 7:00 p.m.
