HATTIESBURG, MISS. - Sophomore Ashley Garcia took a feed from freshman Liz Kinny in the 59th minute and found the net from 20 yards out, lifting the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Southern Miss in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon.
"It is a testament to our character that we recovered from a tough loss on Friday, and turned it into a win today," noted Assistant Coach Tim Nowak.
"We challenged the team at halftime, telling them the team that worked hardest in the second half would come away with the victory, and they responded," added Nowak.
The teams battled to a scoreless first half, with the Golden Eagles(5-3-2, 0-2-1) holding a 7-5 shot advantage.
In the second half, the Cards(4-3-2, 1-2-1) began to control play and outshot the Eagles 8-7.
The goal was Garcia's second of the season, and began with a play in the corner by freshman Jamie Craft, who then got the ball to Kinny.
Junior keeper Meredith Miller made five saves, giving her 3.5 shutouts this season, the seventh-highest total in school history.
Miller now has 6.5 shutouts in her career, tying Molly Halloran(89-92) for fourth on the career list at U of L.
Miller also moved into second place in career goalkeeper minutes with 3,491 in 41 games, passing April Norris(95-97) and putting her behind only Kathy Klope(91-94) who amassed 4,298 minutes in goal.
The win for the Cards is the first Conference USA road victory since October 6, 1996, a 3-1 win over UAB.
Louisville will take a break from conference play, hosting Southeast Missouri State on Friday at Cardinal Park. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. and admission is free.
