TAMPA, FL - The University of Louisville women's soccer team surrendered a controversial late goal in losing at South Florida Friday night 2-1.
"We deserved a better fate than to lose that game," said a frustrated U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
The Cardinals(3-3-2, 0-2-1) took a 1-0 advantage with just under five minutes to go in the first half, when junior Kim Jents finished a feed from junior Mandy Rost for Jents' third goal of the season.
South Florida's Jenny Mulvihill knotted the game at one in the 51st minute on an unassisted effort.
The game winner was scored with exactly one minute to play when Katie Reed's shot appeared to hit the crossbar and bounce to the ground. The linesman ruled it had crossed the line for the winning goal for the Bulls(3-3-1, 2-0-1).
Cardinal keeper Meredith Miller made five stops in net. U of L outshot the Buls 7-5 in the first half, but only managed two shots to the Bulls' eight in the second half.
Louisville freshman Liz Kinny paced the Cards with three shots, while Ashley Garcia had two shots.
The Cards will head to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to face Southern Miss on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to Cardinal Park next Friday against SE Missouri State.
