LOUISVILLE, KY - University of Louisville freshman Jamie Craft scored her team leading fifth goal of the season with just under three minutes left in regulation to secure a 1-1 tie with Memphis in the Conference USA opener for both women's soccer teams.
The Tigers(1-3-3, 0-0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute when Kirsty Marr finished a cross from Nicky McLeod for Marr's second goal of the season.
Louisville(3-1-2, 0-0-1) scored when Memphis goalkeeper Amy Clunie failed to corral sophomore Hollie Minogue's shot and Craft gathered it and buried for the 1-1 tie.
"That's conference play. I've been preparing our players for the fact that everything up to this point has been preseason," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"The intensity, focus and physicality go up a notch, and I think that was a tremendous statement for our kids to battle so hard for 110 minutes," added Ferguson.
Cardinal goalkeeper Meredith Miller made eight saves in the match, including a point blank stop on the Tigers' Yuiko Konno in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
"Meredith Miller was big time," noted Ferguson.
"This team is so different from last year. We are all playing so well together and the freshman are really stepping up," said Miller.
The Tigers held a 21-14 shot advantage, including 4-0 in extra time. Mandy Rost and Lindsay Scheer lead the Cards in shots with three apiece.
Louisville will next face UAB on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. Admission is free.
