YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The University of Louisville women's soccer team used an offensive outburst, scoring four goals in the final 8:06 of the first half, to overwhelm Youngstown State 5-1 in soccer action Friday afternoon.
"We gave up the first goal of the game, but I was really pleased how we came back from the deficit," observed Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
That first tally was put in by Jessica Yarter, unassisted in the 25th minute of the match, putting the Penguins(1-4-0) up 1-0.
A little over 12 minutes later, Louisville(2-1-1) freshman Jamie Craft converted a feed from fellow freshman Liz Kinny for Craft's second on the season to knot the game at one.
In the 41st minute Kinny picked up her third goal of the year on a feed from junior Mandy Rost for the first Cardinal lead of the match.
Craft struck again at 44:28, converting a Cross from freshman Amy Seng to make it 3-1, and just 32 seconds later, before the halftime break, sophomore Ashley Garcia picked up her first career goal on a penalty kick, giving the Cards a 4-1 edge.
The fifth goal of the match for the Cards was scored by freshman Lindsay Scheer, her first career goal, just 40 seconds into the second half for the final margin.
Louisville's five goals were scored in a span of eight minutes and 46 seconds. The final four goals were scored in just under five minutes of clock time.
"Again Lisa Martin stood out, and Amy Seng was strong in the back. Liz Kinny also continued to play well today," added Ferguson.
Following up the 5-0 win over Morehead State last Sunday, the ten goals is the biggest two-game total since October 28th and 31, 1992.
U of L outshot YSU 23-5, and held a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Craft and Scheer each had four shots on goal for the Cards, while Kinny and junior Kim Jents each had three.
Junior keeper Meredith Miller made three saves in her 54 minutes of work, while sophomore Angie Gangel was untested over the final 36 minutes.
Louisville continues the road swing on Sunday as they travel to Dayton, Ohio to face Wright State at noon, before returning home to open conference play against Memphis Friday at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free at Cardinal Park.
