LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team shut out IUPUI 7-0 and Dayton 7-0 Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

In the IUPUI match, the Cards took the doubles point as Cody Conley and Paulo Carvalho edged Aaron Nikou and Brian Slack 9-7 at the top seed; Matt Mayer and Harry Walsh teamed to beat Luke Recker and Marc Pyatt 8-5 at No. 2 and the tandem of Jakob Gustafsson and Jake Kirts defeated Josh Becker and Zak Breneman 8-1 at No. 3.

U of L won five of six singles matches in straight sets. Conley picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nikou at No. 1, and Carvalho defeated Recker 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 at No. 2. Mayer topped Pyatt 7-6, 6-0 at the three-spot, while Jhonny Berrido claimed the No. 4 seed with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Tarvin. Walsh defeated Becket 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 and Sebastian Aspillaga beat Mike Ross 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The match against Dayton marked the first home outdoor match of the spring season for the Cardinals. U of L swept the doubles as Conley and Jakob Gustafsson defeated Rob Altenau 8-3 at No. 1, Mayer and Walsh beat Mike Schissler and D.J. Gebhart 8-5 at No. 2 and Kirts and Aspillaga topped Jamison Downs and Ben Kathary 8-2 at the three-spot.

The Cards swept the singles matches in straight sets as Conley defeated Altenau 6-3, 6-3 at the top seed and Mayer defeated Gebhart 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Berrido defeated Jonathan Khoury 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 and Walsh picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Schissler at the four-spot. Gustafsson beat Downs 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Kirts closed out the singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ben Kathary.

"Our goal was to feel more comfortable outdoors," said Rex Ecarma. "This is only the third time outside since October. With two shutouts, I feel confident that our outdoor tennis has great potential. We want to get into a run and this should help jump-start one."

The Cardinals (10-3) will travel to Montgomery, Ala. March 13-16 for the Blue-Gray Nationals.
