
Cards Lose Another Heartbreaker to Marquette

Louisville, Ky. - Marquette's Kelly Schwerman nailed a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining lead the Golden Eagles to a 79-76 win over Louisville Friday evening in Cardinal Arena. Sophomore Nina Simotes scored a career-high with 18 points. Lori Nero added 15 points and Katie Alsdurf led Marquette with 20 points.
Marquette hit 8 of 9 treys in the second half and shot 60 percent from behind the arc for the game. The Golden Eagles started the second half with a 5-0 run. They hit five consecutive three-pointers to take a 46-40 lead with just over 16 minutes remaining.
The Cardinals took their first lead of the half when Kim Graham made to free throws to finish a 7-0 run with 14:16 left on the clock. The lead changed hands until Marquette pulled away with a 59-54 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Simotes tied the score at 61 with a three point play at the 7:22 mark. Back-to-back jumpers by Sara Nord and Carol Brown put the Cards up 65-61 with just over six minutes remaining. Then back-to-back treys by the Golden Eagles put them ahead 69-65 at the 4:41 mark.
Simotes hit a trey at the 2:18 mark to pull the Cards within one. Nero made a layup with 44 seconds remaining to tie the score at 76. Then Schwerman hit the three-pointer to put Marquette up 79-76. Simotes' trey to tie it hit the iron and Connie Neal came up with the rebound. With nine seconds remaining the Cards came out of timeout and could not convert.
Louisville will close out the home slate on Sunday, Feb. 23 in Cardinal Arena against DePaul. The game is scheduled for a Noon tipoff and will be aired live on WFTE.
