Louisville, Ky. - Freshman Jazz Covington led the Cardinals with 22 points and nine rebounds as Louisville defeated the OBGM Legends 91-61 on Wednesday evening in Cardinal Arena. The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from behind the arc.
"I was pleased with the way we shot the ball tonight," said head coach Tom Collen. "I knew coming in that this team was not a confident shooting team and several players really stepped up and made some shots tonight.
"The game was very uptempo and really kept us from staying in our secondary offense and we weren't able to run our plays. Our defense needs a lot of work and we need to become cohesive as a defensive unit and play together as a team. Our freshmen had a chance to get their feet wet tonight and get some game action under their belt."
The Cardinals took charge of the second half, Covington sparked a 9-2 run with a jumper and a steal which led to a three-pointer by Sara Nord. With 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Cards went on a 10-2 run sparked by back-to-back treys by Connie Neal and Nord.
Louisville got out of the gate early going up 14-4 in the first five minutes of the game. The Cardinals shot 51.4 percent from the field in the first half and 40 percent from the three-point line.
Junior Nina Simotes was second on the team in scoring with 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Katie Olson added 13 points in her debut and Nord finished the game with a career-high 15 assists and 11 points.
The Cards will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 as they host the Indiana Reebok Lady Stars at 7:30 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
