
Women's Basketball Falls in Season Openers

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team fell to Xavier 72-64 in its season opener Friday evening in Cardinal Arena. Senior point guard Sara Nord led the Cardinals with 21 points, six assists and six steals.
Xavier opened up a 10-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Louisville missed its first four shots of the game before Angel Bradley knocked down a three-pointer at the 14:43 mark.
Xavier led 13-3 at the 13-minute mark and then the Cardinals dug in and began a 14-4 run to knot the game at 17 with just over nine minutes to play in the first half. After shooting 0 percent from the field in the first five minutes the Cardinals finished the half shooting 42.9 percent.
The Musketeers started the second half hot from the three-point arc. Xavier hit 6 of 8 from behind the arc in the first 10 minutes of the second half to pull ahead 58-44. Louisville went for five minutes without a basket.
Freshman Jazz Covington stopped the drought with a layup with just over seven minutes remaining. With just over five minutes remaining, the Cards were down 55-69 and went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to seven with 2:55 remaining. Louisville missed its next three shots before Nord got a steal and a layup to end the game.
Xavier shot 52.2 percent from the field in the second half and 60 percent from behind the three-point arc. Louisville shot just 28.6 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from behind the arc in the second half.
Xavier shot 47.2 percent from the field for the game and Louisville finished shooting 34.9 percent. The Musketeers outrebounded the Cards 41-33.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday afternoon following the men's game as they host IPFW at 4:30 in Freedom Hall.
