LOUISVILLE, KY - Lindsay Scheer headed home a cross from fellow freshman Jamie Craft in the 88th minute to lift the University of Louisville Cardinal women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday afternoon.
"This is a great statement by our kids. This is a rivalry game for us, even though they have almost always been on the winning end," said Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
The win marks just the second time in 19 meetings that the Cards have come out on top against UC, the only other win, a 2-1 victory in 1993. In 1996 the teams finished in a scoreless tie.
In the first half, Louisville outshot the Bearcats 6-3, and had four corners, while UC had none.
In the second half, Ferguson made some changes to the staring lineup, leaving junior Jenny Starr in the game after she had entered late in the first half.
Starr had two shots and created a number of scoring opportunities in the second half, sparking a Cardinal team that outshot Cincy 11-1.
"Jenny Starr was special today," added Ferguson.
On the game winner, junior Mandy Rost sent a ball ahead to Craft who worked her way in on the right side, before sending the ball in to Scheer who headed it in, beating UC keeper Sherry Slye low to the right side.
Scheer had 17 shots, leading U of L, while Craft, Starr, Rost,Liz Kinny and Ashley Garcia each had two shots.
Junior keeper Meredith Miller was not called upon to make a save, picking up her fifth shutout of the season, tying a Louisville record as the fourth player to match that total.
Miller posted the second lowest single season GAA at 1.43 as well has the fourth most minutes played with 1,571 on the year.
Miller also ascended a number of other career lists at Louisville, placing third all-time in saves(243), fourth in goals against average(2.08), second in minutes played(4,294) and fourth in shutouts with eight.
Kinny became the fifth player to total five assists in a season, the fifth-best single season total in school history.
As a team, the 2003 Cards were the stingiest defense in school history with seven shutouts, setting a school record. The 1.35 GAA is also the lowest total in school history, and the 25 goals allowed matches the efforts of the 1993 squad.
It was the final game of the 2003 season for the Cards who finished the season 7-9-2 overall and 2-7-1 in Conference USA. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for U of L.
The 2003 Cardinal roster did not have a single senior on the roster. It marks the fourth time in as many years that the team has improved its win total under Ferguson.
