MARTIN, TN - The University of Louisville women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to UT Martin in the 2002 season opener when the Skyhawks converted a corner kick with three minutes remaining to edge Louisville 2-1.
The Cards will open the home season on Sunday as they host Dayton, which advanced to the round of sixteen in last year's NCAA tournament.
"Unfortunately we didn't start the season the way we would have liked to," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"I certainly think we had enough chances to score in the in the 2nd half but we didn't capitalize on them. We are very young and have a lot of work to do." Added Ferguson.
Martin opened he scoring at the 26:58 mark, when senior Sherrie Weeks took a direct free kick from 20 yards out and Amy King picked up the deflection off the goalkeeper for the goal. The score remained tied into half.
Louisville dominated the second half on the field, and tied the score at one when senior Melissa Wark picked up a pass from freshman Ashley Garcia at the corner of the six-yard box in the 69th minute.
U of L outshot the Skyhawks 12-5 in the second half, but could not tally the go-ahead goal. UT Martin's Rachel Callahan picked up a corner kick from Ginger Parson and found the net for the game winner.
UT Martin keeper Caryn Scheufler faced 13 shots for the Skyhawks and had five saves. Louisville's Meredith Miller saw 11 shots and saved four.
The Sunday game against Dayton will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Park, and will be the final chance for fans to purchase a raffle ticket giving them a chance to win a trip for two to Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida.
Tickets are $25.00 or five for $100.00. Proceeds for this raffle will help develop a restricted account that will fund a pre-season training trip to Europe in the fall of 2004 for the women's soccer team. The winner will be drawn at halftime.
