COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Cardinals defeated tournament host Missouri 3-2 Friday evening in their second game of the Missouri Softball Classic.
The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the top of fourth when Rachael McGinnis led off with a single, moved to second on Mary McGrane's sacrifice bunt and scored on Lindsey Jacoby's single. Jacoby moved to third on a Louisville error and scored when Erin Erickson grounded out.
U of L responded in the home half of the inning when Aja Sherman singled and scored on a double by Nicole Sparks. Lisa Estes base hit brought in Sparks to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sara Bausher was hit by a pitch, moved to second on Keola Calderon's single, advanced to third when Melissa Jacobo grounded out and crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the Cards a 3-2 lead.
The Cards were led by Sparks who went two for three with a run scored and an RBI. Starter Jessica Rak (7-5) got the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and striking out five in seven innings pitched.
"This team has a great deal of potential," said head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We need to be more consistent in our hitting, fielding and pitching. It seems like when we perform well in one area, another suffers. Once we can put it all together, we will start to realize our potential."
Louisville (7-11) will face Columbia University (1-1) Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
