
Women's Basketball Defeats Memphis 95-88

Louisville, Ky. - Louisville used an 11-3 run with just over two minutes remaining to defeat Memphis 95-88 Friday night in Freedom Hall. Junior LaKisha Hoffman led the Cardinals with 21 points while Marju Sober added 20. Junior Rita Beckwith led the Lady Tigers with 21 points, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc.
Junior Tiana Ford recorded a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and added five blocks. Kara Kessans and Sara Nord round out the Cardinal top scorers with 13 and 12 points respectively.
The Cardinals shot 50.7 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from behind the arc. While Memphis shot 46.8 percent and 42.1 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinals outrebounded Memphis 40-32.
The Lady Tigers started the second half with a 5-0 run, building a 12-point lead early in the half. The Cardinals responded with an 15-4 run, cutting the Lady Tigers lead to one with 15:57 remaining.
Junior point guard Kalara McFadyen stole the ball and Beckwith nailed a three-pointer to push the lead up to four. The Lady Tigers kept the lead until Sober nailed a three-pointer to tie the score at 67 with 8:56 remaining.
The game saw five more ties before Tiana Ford scored on a putback at the 2:36 mark to put Louisville up 86-84. Louisville hit 7 of 8 from the line in the final two minutes to seal the win.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first five minutes of play. At the 4:58 mark in the first half the Lady Tigers had built a 16-point lead (38-22). The Cardinals then went on a 15-4 to cut the halftime lead to 40-33.
Memphis shot 50 percent from the field and 100 percent from the free throw line in the first half. While the Cardinals shot 43.2 percent from the field and just 20 percent from behind the arc.
The Cardinals will host Saint Louis on Sunday, Feb. 10 in Freedom Hall at 2:00 p.m.
