HOUSTON -- Benny Flynn and Anastasia Zaitseva each had 19 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Houston in Conference USA volleyball action.
Louisville improves its record to 19-4 and 8-1 in the C-USA with the 24-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-25 win. Houston drops to 16-7 and 6-2 in league play.
"This match had a lot of long rallies and momentum changes," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "A player like Jennifer Tanneberger can frustrate your blockers."
Tanneberger had a match-high 25 kills and two aces.
In the first game, it took time for Louisville to adjust to the lineup change that saw Stacey Mercer move to the right side. Down 26-15, Louisville staged a rally catching Houston looking ahead. Getting to within six, at 29-24, Louisville took a timeout to try to freeze the Houston server but it was too little, too late.
In the second game, Louisville looked more fluid, and sensing this, Bill Walton called a timeout after Lousiville took a 5-2 lead. The Cardinals never trailed and kept a solid lead throughout the set, winning 30-24. Zaitseva had seven kills during that stretch.
Louisville hit only .180 in the third game but managed to maintain a lead throughout the game. The Cardinal hitting improved to .404 in the final game.
The Cardinals had four hitters in double digits with Mercer and Jennifer Hoffman each added 10 kills with Bing Sun adding four aces. Setter Jennifer Craven had 54 assists and libero Sarah Drury had a match-high 31 digs.
U of L takes on TCU Saturday evening at 7 p.m. CT.
