
Volleyball Sweeps Dayton in C-USA/Atlantic 10 Challenge

DAYTON, Ohio -- Senior Stacey Mercer had 14 kills, two blocks and two aces in her last regular season match to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-20, 30-24, 30-21 win over the University of Datyon in the final match of the Atlantic 10/Conference USA Volleyball Challenge in the Frericks Center Saturday night.
Louisville, 11th in the RPI's, stands at 27-5 after the final regular season match. Having won 18 of their last 20 matches plus the C-USA regular season crown, they await a possible NCAA at-large bid to be awarded Sunday night a 9 p.m. Dayton ends its season at 22-9.
"We had good ball control and that let us set a variety of hitters to throw off their defense," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "We had two nice wins this weekend and now we play the waiting game for the bid."
Louisville used a 10-point run early in the first game to establish an 11-3 lead. Down 20-9, the Flyers managed a 7-2 run to get to 22-16, but could score only four more points after that. The Cardinals hit .469 to Dayton's 205 and notched three aces, two by Bing. Senior middle hitter Stacey Mercer had a perfect hitting outing with four kills on four attacks.
Louisville had to call timeout early in the second game when Dayton flew out to a 12-9 lead. UD maintained a slim lead at 22-20 when Louisville embarked on a 10-2 run to win the second set 30-24. The Cardinals hit .326 and outblocked the Flyers 3-1. Sun had five kills. U of L hit .326 with the Flyers adding three points on aces.
In the final game, U of L shot out to a 19-11 lead and forced Dayton to use both its timeouts to try to break the Cardinal momentum. Although the Cardinal hitting cooled to .292, the blocking continued to stymie Flyer hitters. U of L outblocked UD 6-3 and had seven aces.
Sun ended the match with 12 kills and two aces. Zaitseva had eight kills and a match-high 18 digs. Setter Jennifer Craven had match-high 41 assists and libero Sarah Drury had 12 digs.
