LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Outside hitter Bing Sun had 14 kills, two aces and tied a career-high with eight blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-20, 30-13, 30-17 win over Conference USA foe Charlotte in a televised match Friday night in Cardinal Arena.
U of L boosts its record to 15-3 and remains undefeated in league play at 4-0. Charlotte drops to 12-10 and 3-2 in the C-USA.
"Charlotte has been playing very well lately, so we had to stay focused, which is not always easy after an emotional win like Tuesday's match against Kentucky," said Leonid Yelin. "Our passing was good which enables our setter, Jennifer Craven, to deliver the ball to our hitters with accuracy and away from Charlotte's defense."
The Louisville defense was formidable, with the Cardinals outblocking the 49ers 11-5, with U of L's Benny Flynn chipping in five. Charlotte hit .000 percent while the Cardinal hit .391 with 49 kills on 92 attacks. Libero Sarah Drury had team-high seven digs on defense.
In game one, Flynn and Sun each had four kills to help U of L to a .314 hitting percentage. Charlotte was outblocked 4-1. U of L bolted from the gates to a 15-7 lead and forced Charlotte to use both its timeouts to try to disrupt the Cardinals' rhythm. The 49ers were able to cut the lead to eight but could get no closer. Charlotte was its own worst enemy with 12 hitting errors and three service errors to give half the game's points to the Cardinals.
U of L used a 7-0 run in the middle of game two to build an insurmountable lead. Sun had six kills and U of L hit a blistering .519
After the break, Charlotte seemed to energize and show the team that took No. 15-ranked North Carolina to a hard-fought four games. Trailing by just two at 12-10 after a pair of hitting errors by the Cardinals, Charlotte seemed poised to gain momentum, however a 12-4 Cardinal run shut down the rally and gave Louisville its fifth win in a row and 11th win in their last 12 matches.
For Louisville, Craven had four kills and 40 assists with Flynn adding in 9 kills and Anastasia Zaitseva contributing seven kills and seven digs.
Charlotte was led by Courtney Burg's nine kills.
Louisville takes on C-USA foe East Carolina Saturday evening at 7:30.
