Jolley's OT Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to Win
September 23, 2001 | Women's Soccer
The win snaps a 35-game losing streak in games against Conference USA teams, and was the first home win in 30 games for the Cardinals(2-4-0, 1-1-0).
"We won today because our goalkeeper Meredith Miller was fantastic," said Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"She made some key saves, including a huge one late in regulation, and assisted on the game winner."
Miller, a freshman, had nine saves in all including the stop in the 71st minute on Leila McReynolds from point blank range. It was also Miller's punt, following a save in overtime that set up Jolley on the breakaway for the game winner.
The Lady Eagles(5-2-0, 0-2-0), opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Tricia Wiles scored on a direct free kick for her fourth goal of the season, giving USM a 1-0 lead.
Junior Melissa Wark tied things up at one just over five minutes later when she punched a rebound home at 18:47. USM keeper Leslie Shoeplein blocked freshman Mandy Rost's shot, but Wark grabbed the rebound and found the net for her team-leading third goal of the season.
In the 29th minute, Rost tallied her first collegiate goal on an assist from junior Liz Bradstreet to put U of L in front 2-1.
The Eagles tied it up just over a minute later when Katie Adams headed home a corner kick at 29:32 for her third of the year, making it 2-2.
The teams played to a scoreless second half before Jolley's heroics at 92:33.
Next the Cards will head to Florida for a conference game against South Florida on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday in Tallahassee versus Florida State at 1:00p.m.
