NORMAL, Ill. - Sarah Drury had five aces to lead the University of Louisville to a three-game sweep of University of Missouri-Kansas City to win the Illinois State/Barker GMC Classic.
The Cardinals improved their record to 3-0, winning 30-23, 30-12, 30-21. UMKC, coached by former U of L assistant Steve Dallman, fell to 0-3.
The Cardinals used their height advantage to outblock the Kangaroos 11-6. Overall, U of L hit .284 to UMKC's .031.
In the first game, the Cardinals couldn't shed the Kangaroos early on. Jana Lacer had two straight kills to bring her team to within three at 18-15. As the Cardinals slowily gained momentum, UMKC had to call timeouts at 21-15 and 26-17. When U of L got to game point at 29-20, UMKC managed to score three points before Lesley Drury slammed home the game point for the 30-23 win. The Cardinals hitting was not stellar at .200 but it was better than UMKC's .017.
"UMKC played with a lot of emotion in the first game, " said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We were able to stay calm and withstand their run." In the second game, after UMKC tied the score at ten, U of L went on a 14-1 run. Behind the strong serving of Emily Roberson who had two aces and Sarah Drury who served for ten straight points including three aces, the Cardinals won 30-12. The .345 hitting percentage was too much firepower for the Kangaroos who had only four kills while committing eight errors on 28 attacks.
Louisville tweaked its lineup in the third game, with Roberson playing right side. She responded by notching three kills. After never trailing by more than two points, UMKC tightened the gap to one on one of Lacers 12 kills at 22-21. With Sarah Drury serving the final eight points, the Kangaroos did not score again. Drury reeled off three aces in that run.
Lesley Drury and Sonja Percan combined for 23 kills and six blocks.
