LOUISVILLE, KY. - Louisville's Amber Jolley tallied a career high three goals and three assists, leading the Cardinals to an 8-0 victory over NAIA's Georgetown College in exhibition action on Saturday at Cardinal Park. Junior midfielder Melissa Wark and freshman Lisa Martin added two goals apiece in the Cards biggest win since U of L trounced Kentucky 18-0 on September 21st, 1985-the first season of varsity soccer at Louisville.
"It is nice to begin the transition to a successful program on the other end of one of these games," said head coach Karen Ferguson. "We were a little sluggish to open the game, and I was not happy with the first half, but we pressured the ball a lot better in the second half, which in turn created more scoring opportunities."
Jolley opened the scoring when she gathered a pass from Wark and beat Tiger goalkeeper Leah Crews high to give the Cards a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute. The play was set up by a feed from freshman midfielder Jenny Starr.
"It was great to see our captain and senior leader(Jolley), play such a great game," added Ferguson.
Wark notched her first goal in the 38th minute off a nice feed from senior Jerika Amos to give the Cards a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half began with Martin's first tally, heading in a corner off the foot of freshman Sandy Kay Klabechek in the 51st minute.
Jolley made it 4-0 with her second of the game in the 67th minute matching Martin's header off the corner. After having a similar attempt thwarted by a defender in the 66th minute, Jolley this time converted the corner kick by freshman Leigh Carroll.
Jolley then set up Martin's second of the game, sending her untouched up the middle where she tapped one past the Tigers Jill Gronotte, who replaced Crews giving U of L a 5-0 advantage.
Wark scored what would be the first of three Cardinal goals in 1:38 when she ripped a left footer from the top of the box on a lead pass from Jolley into the back of the net at 82:01.
Carroll followed just 17 seconds later when she sent one over Gronotte's head from 20 yards out off the kickoff making it 7-0.
Jolley wrapped up the scoring, completing the hat trick with a tap in off a beautiful feed from freshman Gina Lower at 83:39.
Louisville outshot Georgetown 38-2. Freshman golkeeper Meredith Miller was called upon to make just a single save, and notched the shutout for the Cards.
The margin of victory is the third largest in the history of Cardinal soccer, as were the eight goals. Because it was an exhibition game the records will not count toward the regular season totals.
The Cards will scrimmage the alumnae team Sunday at 1:00p.m. at Cardinal Park, before opening the season at IUPUI on August 31st at 8:00p.m.ET.
