DePaul Edges Louisville 2-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to top seed DePaul 2-1 Friday in the second round of the 2001 Conference Softball Tournament presented by U of L Health Care. DePaul entered the tournament ranked No. 13 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
Louisville starter Mandy Rockwell was in the midst of a no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, when DePaul's Katy Kukman blasted a two-run home run, to give the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead.
The Cards responded with a run in the top of the sixth when Candi Padilla singled to reach base, moved to second on Nikki Gaudio's single, and scored on a DePaul error to pull within one.
U of L threatened in the top of the seventh when Nicole Sparks singled to reach first and moved to third when Keola Calderon and Melissa Jacobo reached on two consecutive two-out walks to load the bases. Padilla's shot to center field did not have the distance and was caught for the third out of the inning, giving DePaul the 2-1 win.
Rockwell (7-8) took the loss, allowing two hits and striking out two in five innings. Chouinard (24-7) got the win, allowing eight hits and one unearned run and striking out five in seven.
Offensively, the Cards were led by Lisa McMillan who went two-for-three with and Coleen Coughlin went two-for-four.
Louisville (38-25) drops to the loser's bracket and will play Charlotte (17-32) Friday at 4:30 p.m.
