Softball Completes Sweep of Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Charlotte 10-3 in the completion of Saturday's rain delayed game and then won 9-3 in the final contest of the three game set on Sunday.
The teams resumed game two of the series in the top of the fourth inning with the score 6-3. Louisville added an insurance run in the fifth when Val Smith reached on a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Sota, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on another passsed ball. The Cards picked up three more runs in the sixth inning when Candi Padilla reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Nicole Sparks' single, and advanced the third when Kristi Rozelle's walk loaded the bases. Padilla scored on a passed ball and Soto's two-run double brought in Sparks and Rozelle to make the final score 10-3.
U of L starter Tara McClure (12-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs and scattering three hits over four innings. She struck out four. Jessica Rak notched her first save of the year, allowing two hits and striking out five in three innings pitched.
Offensively for the Cards, Coleen Coughlin went three-for-four with one run scored, Padilla went two-for-four with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI, Sparks finished two-for-four with one run scored and one RBI and Soto went two-for-two with three RBI.
In the final game of the series, the Cardinals scored in the second inning when Jacobo led off the inning with a single to right field. She moved to second when Padilla grounded out, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Christina Soto's infield single.

The 49ers tied the game in the bottom of the second when Kiley Scott drew a walk to start the inning, moved to third on Denise Atmar's double and scored on Vicki Van Dam's base hit. Charlotte pulled ahead 2-1 in the third inning when Kristin White reached on a walk, was sacrificed over to second and scored on Leah Heston's single.
The Cards put up a four-spot in the fourth when Sparks' single and a Charlotte error emptied the bases, scoring Keola Calderon, Jacobo, Padilla and Sparks to give Louisville a 5-2 lead. In the fifth inning, the Cards capitalized on two 49er errors and singles by Jacobo and Padilla to bring in Kenzie Meisenburg and Calderon, making the score 7-2.
Charlotte added a run in their half of the fifth when Scott scored on a bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 7-3.
U of L added two more runs in the sixth when Meisenburg and Jacobo reached on walks and scored on Sparks' two-run double for a final score of 9-3.
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (11-6) got the win, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out four. McClure picked up her second save of the season without allowing a run or a hit and striking out three.
Jacobo finished the game hitting three-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI. Sparks went two for three with one run scored and six RBI. Soto went two-for-four with one RBI.
U of L 28-12 (5-1 C-USA) will play host to Marshall on Wednesday, April 4 at Ulmer Stadium. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
