SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Morehead State 3-0 Thursday night in the first round of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament hosted by Sacramento State.
The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Nicole Sparks singled to reach first, moved to second on Kristi Rozelle's base hit, advanced to third on Val Smith's single and scored the game-winner on Coleen Coughlin's infield single.
Louisville added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Smith led off the inning with a single, moved to second on Coughlin's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third when Kenzie Meisenburg grounded out to the pitcher and scored on Keola Calderon's single to left center. Calderon moved to second when Candi Padilla was hit by a pitch and scored on Melissa Jacobo's single to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.
U of L starter Jessica Rak (6-4) tossed her fourth shutout of the season, allowing two hits and striking out 11 in seven innings pitched.
Offensively for the Cards, Coughlin finished the game batting two-for-three with one RBI, Smith went two-for-three with one run scored, and Jacobo went two-for-four with an RBI
Louisville (17-8) will play Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday at noon EST.
