Softball Finishes Runner-up in Metrodome Softball Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to host Minnesota 6-3 in the finals of the Metrodome Softball Classic.
In the championship game against the Golden Gophers, U of L struck early in the first inning when lead-off hitter Coleen Coughlin beat the throw for an infield single to reach first. She moved to second on Kenzie Meisenburg's base hit and scored on Keola Calderon's double to left field to give Louisville the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Gophers answered in the bottom of the first when they loaded the bases and Veronica Roberts hit a three-run triple down the right field line to give Minnesota a 3-1 lead.
Minnesota added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Shelly Nichols led off the inning with a single, moved to second on Piper Marten's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third when Hays single to centerfield and crossed the plate on Allie Fisk's single to give the Golden Gophers a 4-1 advantage.
The Cards threatened in the top of the fifth inning when they had the bases loaded with no outs, but Melissa Jacobo hit into a double play that left runners at second and third. Padilla drew a walk to load the bases. A Golden Gopher fielding error sent Meisenburg home and Val Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to pull Louisville within one and make the score 4-3. The inning ended when Kristi Rozelle grounded out to third.
Minnesota added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Hailee Nanchy hit a two-run double with the bases loaded to make the score 6-3.
Louisville starting pitcher Jessica Rak (2-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out one.
The Cards (5-3) will play host to Ohio University on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
