CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team used three second half goals by three different players to defeat Louisville, 3-1 on Sunday.
"The scores over the weekend have not been an accurate indication of how well we have played," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"The difference has been that we have not taken advantage of our opponent's mistakes, while they have capatalized on ours."
The teams battled to a scoreless first half before Jill Hayes connected on her third goal of the season at 53:04. Shannon Roberto launched a shot from near midfield towards the penalty box, where freshman Jill Leeder redirected the ball to Hayes.
Just under seven minutes later, sophomore Tiffany Ross sent a corner kick to Kim Moore inside the six-yard box. Moore then found Jennie Leeder who turned and fired for the Niners' second goal of the match at 58:59 to make it 2-0 Charlotte.
Cardinal freshman Mandy Rost collected a pass from Lisa Martin following a corner kick and found the back of the net past 49er keeper Jenn Howell from the top of the penalty area to cut the lead in half at 2-1. It was Rost's third of the season and her second of the weekend.
The49ers capped the scoring at 82:16, when midfielder Lindsay Duncan sent a long pass to freshman Kim Miles on a breakaway for her first career goal
The 49ers improve to 8-6-3, 6-2-1 in Conference USA for 13 points. Louisville drops to 4-12 overall, 2-7 in C-USA action for four points. According to league rules, each team receives two points for a win, one for a tie, and zero for a loss in determining the seeding for the upcoming Conference USA Tournament, which will be held November 7-10 in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Cards will wrap up the regular-season on Friday, November 2, as they host Cincinnati at Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free as the team honors seniors Jerika Amos, Amber Jolley and Kristin Tapp.
