Volleyball Ousts Blue Demons 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Lesley Drury had 18 points and four blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over DePaul University in Conference USA Volleyball.
Louisville improved to 12-3 and 7-2 in the conference with the 30-28, 30-21, 26-30, 30-24 win. DePaul falls to 13-4 and 5-2 in C-USA.
"We were hitting on all cylinders tonight," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
The Cardinals relied on its hittng after tying at seven and then running off four straight points to take the lead for good. The Blue Demons stayed close just one point behind when Louisville got to game point. The Cards outhit the Demons 313 to 213. The Cardinals had started freshman Zoya Filippova at setter in front of senior Jing Ding. Filippova went down with a knee injury just 10 points into the match. Ding came off the bench and seamlessly led the Cardinals to the 30-28 win.
In the second game, Louisville got off to a 6-1 start and built a 14 point lead before DePaul was able to reel off six straight points to get to within seven points at 27-20 but could only score once more as the Cardinals won 30-21. Again the Demons were outhit .065 to .325.
"We were moving around the ball well and really chasing down some balls that seemed to fall in yesterday against Marquette, " said Yelin.
After the break, DePaul, which is ranked second in the region behind Louisville, jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Cards rebounded to tie at five and ten. DePaul went up three at 13-10 on a kill by Stephanie Bishop. The two teams then see-sawed with ties a 15,16,17, 18, 19. DePaul squirted ahead for good after a tie at 24, outscoring U of L 6-2 down the stretch for the 30-26 win.
In the deciding game of the match, U of L hit a blistering .500 connecting for 23 kills on 44 attacks and just one error.
The Cards had four players with double digit kills. Sonja Percan had 20, with Anastasia Zaitseva and Stacey Mercer notching 16 and 12 respectively.
DePaul was led by Bishop's 16 kills and 17 digs.
