LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Jennifer Amobi had 23 kills to lead Marquette to a 3-2 win over Louisville in Conference USA volleyball action at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
The Cardinals dropped their second league match of the week for a 6-2 C-USA when they fell 26-30, 30-28, 30-16, 29-31, 14-16. Marquette improves to 10-6 and 4-2 in C-USA.
"We are very disappointed that we moved away from our game plan and played to their tempo," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. The Golden Eagles swooped out to a commanding 15-5 lead in the first game. Louisville had a 13-7 run but the deficit was too much to surmount. Marquette out-hit the Cardinals .368 to .171.
"We just let them pull out to a big lead and then didn't have time to make up the gap," said Yelin.
The Cardinals seemed to regroup in the second set taking the first lead at 19-18. Sonja Percan and Anastasia Zaitseva powered the offense with each of them scoring six points down the stretch. A Lesley Drury service ace gave Louisville the win.
Momentum stayed with the Cardinals in the third game, when U of L built a 17-6 lead and then polished off the Golden Eagles with .528 hitting.
Louisville tried to scramble in the fourth game when Marquette ran off seven straight points to go up 24-15. The Cardinals went on a 13-3 run and then tied at 28 and 29. Marquette scored the final two points on U of L hitting errors.
Marquette edged Louisville in the final set for the win.
Louisville had four hitters with double digit kills led by Sonja Percan's 26. Drury and Zaitseva each had 15 kills apiece.
