
Women's Basketball Wins A Heartstopper In Overtime Against DePaul

Chicago, Ill. - University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated DePaul University 99-97 in overtime tonight in DePaul Athletic Center. The Cards improve to 8-7 on the season and 3-1 in Conference USA play.
Marju Sober led Louisville with a career-high 32 points and tied the school record with eight three-pointers. Three other Cardinals scored double-figures, Sara Nord with 26, Kara Kessans with 19 and Carol Brown with 12. Junior Lanae Williams led the Blue Demons with 38 points.
"It was a total team effort tonight," said head coach Martin Clapp. "Our shooters stepped up and hit some really big shots."
DePaul jumped out to a six point lead in overtime. Freshman Sara Nord hit a three-pointer and Janelle Antoine hit a jump shot to cut the lead to one. With 1:17 remaining in the overtime period, Sober hit a thee-pointer to put the Cards up 93-91. DePaul then tied it at 93 and converted a three-point play by Sylvia Blakeslee to go up by one with 1:01 remaining.
The Cards then went ahead 96-94 with 43 seconds remaining by a three-pointer from Sober. DePaul's Laura Sobieszczyk nailed a three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining to put the Blue Demons up by one. With two seconds remaining Nord made a layup and drew the foul. Nord nailed the free-throw and sealed the game for the Cardinals.
Louisville finished the overtime period shooting 62.5 percent and 56.7 percent for the game. DePaul shot 69 percent in the second half and 46.5 percent for the game.
DePaul opened up the second half with a 17-3 run to cut the lead to 42-39 with 15:45 remaining. Louisville stayed in the game behind their three-point shooting after DePaul opened the second half in a zone defense.
The Cards hit eight three pointers in the second half and three in the overtime period. DePaul never took the lead in the second half but tied it up at 85 of two free throws from Molly Watson to put the game into extra periods.
The Blue Demons opened up the first half with a 6-0 lead. The Cardinals then went on a 8-0 run to take the lead with 16:35 remaining in the half. Louisville then managed a 11-2 run in the next five minutes to keep the lead for the rest of the half. The Cards went into the break with a 39-22 lead.
The Cards shot 65.2 percent for the half, with three Cardinals in double-figures at the break. Sober lead the Cards with 12 points. DePaul shot 28.1 percent for the half.
Louisville will travel to Milwaukee to take on the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
