The Marquette women's soccer team tied a school record for most goals in a Conference USA game Friday evening as it registered a 7-0 win over the University of Louisville. The Cardinals fell to 1-6 overall, 0-1 in league action. The triumph upped the Golden Eagles' record to 5-1 overall, 2-0 in C-USA.
Seven different players scored goals for MU as the Golden Eagles won their 11th straight game played at the Valley Fields dating from last season. Sophomore Kate Gordon's third goal of the season at the 9:14 mark was MU's first goal of the game and the team was never seriously challenged after that. Sophomore Erin Maysent (Ames, Iowa) and senior Katherine Ward (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded their first and second goals of the season, respectively, to give Marquette a 3-0 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to pour it on, scoring four goals. Freshman Carolyn Klopp (Glendale, Wis.) accounted for MU's first goal following halftime at 48:04 that represented her first marker of the season. Just five minutes and thirty seconds later, junior Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee) chalked up her first tally of the campaign from close range off a crossing pass from Gordon. Sophomore Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis.) and freshman Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) picked up the team's final two goals of the game at 74:55 and 83:57. Vendetti drew her third assist of the night on Spakowitz's marker, tying a Valley Fields record for most assists in a match.
Marquette finished the game with a 34-1 edge in shot attempts and finished with 12 corner kicks while blanking the Cardinals in that category. Louisville goalies Lynn Clashman (45:00, 7 saves) and Jordan Fredriksen (45:00, 4 saves) combined for 11 stops.
Louisville returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 17) when it travels to chicago to face DePaul.
