Cards Win Battle of the Bluegrass

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball defeated the University of Kentucky 63-57 tonight in front of a crowd of 6,413 in Freedom Hall. Louisville's Marju Sober put in a career-high night, scoring 26 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Rita Adams led the Wildcats with 14 points.
Kentucky started the game with a 6-0 run. Junior guard Sober got the sluggish Cardinal offense started, scoring the first six points of the first half.
Kentucky led 30-26 at the half. Louisville shot just 26.7 percent from the field and was able to stay in the game behind Sober's 12 first half points.
"Marju kept us in the game in the first half," said head coach Martin Clapp. "This was her first chance to play against Kentucky and she was relaxed and played like she does in practice. She knows she has the green light to shot but it is her defense and rebounding that has really improved. "
The Wildcats started the second half strong, building an 11 point lead in the first five minutes. The Cardinals kept coming back and tied the game at 42 with 7:31 remaining. Junior Janelle Antoine nailed two free throws to put the Cards up 44-42 and took the lead for good.
The Cardinals have struggled from the line this season but they were able to convert on eight of eight from the line to keep the Wildcats at bay.
After going down with a knee injury in the early minutes of the first half, junior Shamika Ingram became a presence in the post the second half. Ingram scored 11 points in the second half.
"They did a good job of taking away our low post game in the first half," said Clapp. "They caused our post players to turnover the ball and miss some shots.
"I would have to say that this was the first time I carried a player off in the first half and she came back to play like Shamika did in the second half. "
